Post Production

Software

After shooting our opening scene, we used the software 'Adobe Premier Pro' to edit our sequence. Adobe Premier Pro is used in the film industry to edit feature length films such as: Avatar (the highest grossing film in history), Deadpool and The Social Network so we were very fortunate to use the software. The software enabled us to go into great detail when editing our opening scene therefore we could edit the sound, visuals, titles and gradient. The first step we took when editing our footage to create our opening scene was using the 'rushes' where all our footage was stored. We reviewed all our footage for the first time, documenting the shots that were the most technically successful as well as the shots that communicated the themes of our opening scene whilst engaging the audience. We then ordered the shots on the software's timeline to create a sense of progression and narrative. The software was simple to use after our editing workshops and made the process efficient in a time where many of the group members were absent. After ordering the shots, playing with the numerous possibilities we cut them down creating smooth transitions from one shot to the next. The footage shot over several hours was soon cut down to a little over two minutes. One of the negative aspects of our footage was the impact the ever-changing weather had on the shots creating a differing gradient from one shot to the next. We agreed that changing the gradient would be the last aspect we would address and edit enabling us flexibility and saving time if we were to change some of the footage later on. Next, we discussed what our titles would be and integrated them onto our opening scene footage using the various fonts the software provided. After placing the titles on the screen in multiple positions within the frame we embarked on the sound element of editing. We decided on a soundtrack to add to the scene creating another horror element to the scene. We added the soundtrack along the bottom of the timeline allowing us to edit the sound on the actual footage. We used the software to adjust the volume of both the actor's voice and the soundtrack, gradually getting louder. This was our first time shooting using outdoors with the equipment so at times the microphone picked up unnecessary sound which we removed on Adobe Premier Pro. After the sound had been edited in each shot to the right volume level, we began changing the gradient on each scene, typically making each scene a colder temperature to add to the horror genre. Finally, after each aspect was complete, the scene was fully edited on the Adobe Premier Pro software and the scene was finished.

Hardware

Hardware remained essential post-production of our opening scene as we uploaded all the footage from the 4k Black Magic Mini Ursa to the MacBook Pro allowing us to edit the footage and join the shots together to make the scene.

Online

Online platforms such as Snapchat, Youtube and Blogger was an important part of the post-production process. Snapchat allowed the group to continue communicating through the editing phase enabling us to book times to edit our scene in the editing suite and make joint decisions about the scene. We messaged each other daily to establish what was to be done on any given day in order to edit the scene efficiently and completely. Blogger was used to discuss the work we had been completing and outlining the exact details of the post production process such as editing and the exhibition of our opening scene. Youtube became a major part of the post-production as it was the platform we exhibited our opening scene. We also published the behind the scenes video on Youtube, documenting our shoot day.
